What To Consider When Choosing A Spin Class

Starting your indoor cycling journey is exciting! To get the most out of your decision, here are some top factors to consider:

At-Home sessions or Studio Classes?

Did you know that you don’t have to go to a gym or studio to take part in a cycling class? If you prefer the convenience of working out from home, there are a number of at-home bikes and products you can follow along with in real-time. These also offer on-demand classes, that can bring the studio experience directly to your living room.

However, the downside to at-home sessions is that you miss out on the social aspect and energy of a studio environment. Without the presence of fellow cyclists and motivating instructors, it can be harder to stay motivated and push yourself to your limits. Additionally, some people find it challenging to carve out dedicated workout space at home or invest in expensive equipment upfront.

Understand Your Goals

Next is to consider your goals. This will ultimately help you decide on the best class that aligns with this. Studios, like Cyclebar, have a range of packages and classes that cater to various fitness levels and objectives. Whether you’re looking to build strength and endurance or just looking for a fun way to spice up your regular routine, understanding your goals will guide you in selecting the most suitable class format and intensity level.

Consider The Equipment And Facilities

A lot of studios will have a different range of equipment and facilities. To help you choose a studio, consider the type of equipment and amenities they offer. Do the bikes have real-time progress tracking? Do the classes offer cycling shoes, or do you need to bring your own? Additionally, you should consider if there are amenities such as showers, lockers, and water stations.

With Cycle Bar, we've got it all and more! In addition to the best amenities, our bike offer CycleStats which measures six key metrics of your daily and historical performance. It also emails you the results after each ride to help keep you on track towards your fitness goal.

Is There Room For Progression?

Another factor to consider is whether your chosen studio has room for progression. While spin classes offer a number of benefits, you want to ensure that you can still achieve your goals as your skills improve.

Opt for studios (like us!) or programs that offer a diverse range of class options catering to different fitness levels and goals. Look for classes that not only accommodate beginners but also challenge seasoned cyclists, ensuring that everyone can find a suitable level of intensity.

Look At Location & Schedule

When choosing a spin class, convenience is key. Opt for a class that fits seamlessly into your routine, whether it's conveniently located near your home or office. Additionally, consider the scheduling options offered by the studio. Look for classes that align with your availability and offer flexible timing to accommodate your busy lifestyle. Selecting a studio that is easily accessible not only saves you time but ensures you can commit to your workouts!

Read Recommendations & Reviews

Seek out recommendations from friends, family, or online communities, and browse reviews to gauge the experiences of past participants. Not only do personal testimonials offer valuable insights into what to expect from a particular class or instructor, but can help you decide whether a studio is the right fit for you! Even if a studio has glowing reviews, its class structure or teaching methods might not be what you are looking for.

Tips For Your First Spin Class

Like any new workout, getting started can feel scary! That’s why it is always best to be prepared. Here are some top tips for your very first spin class:

  • Get to your class early: Arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the class starts. This will give you time to get familiar with the bike, adjust your settings, and introduce yourself to the instructor. They'll help you set up and ensure you're comfortable before you begin.
  • Wear breathable clothing: As cycle classes are known for working up a sweat, be sure to choose moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the workout.
  • Bring plenty of water: Spinning is an intense workout, so staying hydrated is crucial. Bring a large water bottle and take sips throughout the class to keep your energy levels up.
  • Fuel up with a small meal: It is important to ensure your body has the nutrition and energy it needs for your workout. A small, light meal a few hours before your session will help you feel energised. It is also recommended to have a light meal after your session as well.
  • Consider your resistance level: This refers to the knob on your bike to simulate going up or down a hill, just as if you were cycling outside. Don't be afraid to adjust the resistance to a level that suits you. More resistance means it will be more difficult to pedal the bike, and will take more strength. If you have to consciously make an effort to pedal, dial back your resistance. On the other hand, if you are cycling too quickly (and almost out of control) you would benefit from more resistance.
  • Breathe: Remember to breathe deeply and steadily. Proper breathing helps you maintain stamina and reduces fatigue. Focus on your breath to stay calm and centred, especially during challenging intervals.
  • Have fun: Most importantly, enjoy the experience! Embrace the music, the energy of the class, and the encouragement from your instructor. Have fun with it and celebrate your progress, no matter how small!
